Choose an item that fits under furniture and has a real-time hazard-avoidance feature to keep away from hitting objects within your home. Other aspects to consider include the cleaning capabilities, noise levels and mapping capabilities.

1. Roomba j7+ from iRobot. Self-Emptying Robot Vacuum

Robot vacuums can be time-saving, but they may have problems if toys get stuck in their wheels. The machine will shut off when this happens. iRobot Combo J7+, however, does its best to avoid that, making it one of the first robots we've tested to mop. It's also the best robot vacuum mop combo for pet hair of its kind at navigating and cleaning different floor types.

The navigation system of the j7+ uses a front-facing camera as well as lasers to help it identify objects like furniture legs and power cords that could get in the way of its path. It also recognizes the type of surface, which helps it choose the right cleaning mode for each space. This means better performance for different floor types, including pet hair, as well as other debris which tend to cling low-pile carpet.

In our test the j7+ did an excellent job on bare floors, picking up 97.3 percent of a Cheerios-strewn floor, and beating out the Roborock S4 Max and Eufy RoboVac X8 Hybrid, but falling short of their perfect cereal pickup scores. It was able to do a decent job on carpets with low pile, too, but struggled to get onto high-pile carpets and tended to skim the surface instead of digging into it.

The J7+ is a dock-based robot vacuum. Contrary to other robot vacuums that empty at the base, the j7+ will empty itself. You can set a timer to when it will empty itself or start an emptying process with a single press of a button. iRobot has also made the dock smaller and lighter, which opens up more spaces in your home to store it between cleaning tasks.

The j7+ is priced higher than the Roomba i4 vacuum only but it has lots of additional features. It's the most efficient robot we've observed for avoiding obstacles. It also comes with top-quality mops and edge-sweeping brush. Dual multi-surface rubber brush and improved navigation. Plus, it's backed by iRobot's Petowner Official Promise: The manufacturer guarantees to replace any unit that fails to eliminate solid pet waste. The j7+ we believe is worth the extra money, especially if your home is cluttered and you own pets.

2. Eufy RoboVac X8 Hybrid

The eufy RoboVac X8 Hybrid is a good choice that checks all the right boxes for a robotic vacuum cleaner. It has a high battery performance and can be set to clean on a regular basis and offers improved smarts with multiple map support and LIDAR scanning. It can mop hardwood floors and its twin turbine technology automatically adjusts the suction according to the surface type.

Compared to the company's earlier robot vacuums, this is an improvement in terms of design and features. It's still similar to other robots available (round shallow, rounded and with a lot of rounded edges), but it has stylish bronze flourishes that give it a premium appearance.

The X8 is easy to use and has an excellent companion app for iOS and Android devices. The interface is easy to use, simple and reliable. It has some unique features, such as the ability to block off areas that you don't want to clean. You can also transfer it to any location in your home's map by simply tapping.

It was enjoyable to see how quickly and effectively the X8 removed pet hairs and dirt off of hard floors. It also performed a stellar job on carpets with high piles as well as unfinished floors which makes it an extremely versatile all-rounder. The roller brush can get blocked with hair however a quick swivel of the comb and cut with a pair of scissors will take care of the issue.

The X8 comes with a two-year warranty as well as a convenient charging dock. It takes approximately four hours to fully charge, and the indicator light is simple to read as it changes from solid blue to flashing orange when power is running low.

3. ILIFE Pro V3

The ILIFE V3s Pro is a robot vacuum cleaner that keeps an eye on pet hair. It is a tangle-free vacuum that does not use brushes that can get blocked with hair clumps. This makes sure that your pet's hair is not trapped inside the machine, and it's effectively removed from the floor. The V3s Pro also has a slim design and self-charges automatically, adding to its impressive list of features.

The V3s Pro's tangle-free suction earned it the top score in our tests, capturing all the pet hair we placed on a hardwood floor, without getting tangled or caught in the machine. It was able to pick-up some of the larger pieces of hair I put on the floor that other machines could not. The ILIFE V3s Pro is also excellent at maneuvering in tiny spaces. Its slim profile makes it easy to maneuver under sofas and beds.

It's not without flaws. As with most budget robot vacuums such as the V3s Pro isn't capable of collecting debris from rugs or carpets with high piles. It's only able to get close to a knot before it starts sucking up hairs or rug. And its side suction and brush were not sufficient to remove mud crumbles that had been dropped on.

The ILIFE V3s Pro is still an excellent value when you're looking for a cheap pet-friendly robot vacuum. Its battery lasts for over two hours and it is possible to program it to clean when you're away from home.
